COACHING VS THERAPY | WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

You've tried therapy.  Maybe you loved it, but want something fresh.  Maybe you ventured once and never went back.  More commonly, it's quite possible that you felt it would be great for someone in your family, yet they determined -"It wasn't for them" or "They're not the problem".

This can be frustrating.  In western culture, we have placed traditional 'therapy' (CBT) and other conventional or trendy methods (rehab, DBT, aversion therapy, etc.) as the gold standards for mental health and behavioral change.

Unfortunately, this tells us that if these services haven't been effective for our situation, then it must our fault. Right?  Or maybe they have just run their course and you're faced with, what's next?

On the surface, Coaching may not look a whole lot different than Therapy, yet, the experience is quite different.  Let's take a look...
  • Coaching is a relationship based method of therapy that breaks down the '4th wall' between the coach and client.
  • You will get to know your coach and develop a bond that extends outside the dedicated sessions.
  • Coaching is most similar 'narrative therapy', made popular in the 70's & 80's by Michael White in Australia and Milton Erickson in the U.S.
  • Our primary focus is to help an individual or family take actions to rebuild aspects of their life, gain new perspective on others, and redefine relationships with their environment (people, places & things).
  • We are progress oriented and each week you will be given goals and objectives that keep you or yuor loved one moving forward in their progress.
  • Coaching is more dynamic and will often involve the participation of other individuals in a person's life.
  • In general a coach's nature is that of higher risk and may choose to ask the more difficult question.
  • Best put- Coaching is a team effort in building the life you desire.  For some clients, it's a 'less is more' approach and others it's the 'all-in, high intensity' Tom Brady way of getting things done.

THERAPY

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is often what we think of when we talk about therapy or counseling.  This is also known as 'talk therapy'.  Let's dive in...
  • Therapy is about exploration through discussion.  As a client it is your moment in the sun to talk things out to an impartial third party.
  • In most circumstances your relationship with your therapist will stay within the four walls of their office and be one-sided.  When the sessions ends, the relationship ends.
  • A therapist is a great fit for exploring highly traumatic events or as a weekly sounding board for current events.
  • Therapy is more 'feeling' oriented than goal oriented.  Progress is important, but a therapist's nature is often to be more comforting and may focus more on ensuring a person leaves their session in a positive state.
  • Therapy is highly regulated.  For instance, one is required to take detailed session notes that can be subpoenaed in a legal situation.
  • This has put therapists in a difficult position of-                              "What's best for the client?" vs "What's less risk for me, the provider?"
  • Best put- Therapy is client-driven & less likely to push you outside your comfort zone.  Do not expect your therapist to bring new ideas to the table or to dive any deeper than you guide them to.  This is where we've seen individuals, including ourselves, get stuck in therapy.
  • Does this make therapy bad?  No!  It's about what works for you.
